There is so much public discussion regarding the Aboriginal people, their plight and how sorry for ourselves we should feel.
There are a variety of different ways you can look at it but there is always another side of the coin.
When the white people settled in Australia surely it was not only negative feelings on the side of the Aboriginals.
There must have been at least a slight slimmer of curiosity towards their invaders. Who are these people? Why are they even here?
I mean the Aboriginal way of life was forever changed with the invasion of white people but there are other parts of ancient Australia culture that still thrives- namely possums.
These annoying furry animals still rule the streets all over the country. It is a daily reminder to me that no matter how much you change things the base elements will always remain.
I am proud of Australia’s ancient history and I personally disagree with any notion that there has been any kind of genocide.
Their culture clashed with the modern world. And the British were complete dicks about it. The invasion was violent and destructive, but the essence of Aboriginal culture is still there and can never be wiped out.
Looking back it seems horrible and awful what happened, but it was the zeitgeist of the times. And we should not be made to feel bad about things we cannot truly understand.
Another good example is the Tasmanian Devil. This animal was already on the way out before the whites arrived. But now we are made to hang our heads in shame over their demise.
Put it down to ecology or science, put it down to human nature, whatever it is – shit happens. But no matter what happens nothing can ever be fully destroyed or replaced. Just look at how good the Papua New Guineans are doing.
So now that we have the black lives matter movement gaining momentum in America, please let’s not let Australia get sucked into anything like this.
This is a group that is dividing people based on the colour of their skin which is no good. Something like that would never really catch on in Australia. We already know we are a bit racist. It is just the way it is.
In the meantime Australia has become the most successful multicultural country ever. It could be true that as a migrant country Aboriginal Australians will be seen in the future as the true Australians. Gosh it is an interesting country.
Who knows what will happen in the current socio-political environment we are living in.
People say that things happen for a reason and I believe it to be true. In this super connected world there is no doubt that every action has some kind of consequence.
I just hope that someone reads this message and enjoys it. I have given these issues a lot of thought so hopefully it is somewhat insightful. Look on the bright side folks!
